Chat transcript: Shelly Anderson on the Penguins
Monday, December 28, 2009

2:32 Shelly Anderson: Hello. Hope everyone had a good holiday. Let's get to some questions. Monday December 28, 2009 2:32 Shelly Anderson

2:32 Giskard: Hello, I know the the main focus is to re-sign Letang/Gonchar, but what about Matt Cooke? As I like him as a Penguin, I would hate to see him against us ... any news that he will stay next year? I can't see him walk away ... Monday December 28, 2009 2:32 Giskard

2:36 Shelly Anderson: That's a good question. Matt Cooke adds a lot of tenacity with some skill and has been part of a very solid third line centered by Jordan Staal. The Penguins, however will have to make a few other players -- such as defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Kris Letang -- their top priority and then see where everyone else fits in terms of salary cap. That's going to be an annual thing. Remember, no one wanted to see Jarkko Ruutu go. Monday December 28, 2009 2:36 Shelly Anderson

2:36 Tyrone: I think we need a bigger bruiser. An enforcer to protect the mighty Crosby. What say you, oh wise one? Monday December 28, 2009 2:36 Tyrone

2:40 Shelly Anderson: I've been called a lot of things, but wise one doesn't come up very often. I think Eric Godard is very good in his role as enforcer. And for a lot of this season, he's played some of his best hockey outside of the fighting. We aren't in the era anymore of having someone like that skate on a line with a top skill player such as Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin. Enforcers, if they are in the lineup, aren't going to get a lot of ice time. Godard seems to make the most of the time he gets. And he has been willing to take on the other NHL heavyweights with no hesitation. Monday December 28, 2009 2:40 Shelly Anderson

2:44 Shelly Anderson: I know things are a little slow with a holiday audience, but we're open for questions. Monday December 28, 2009 2:44 Shelly Anderson

2:44 Tyrone: What is the best/worst arena for concessions and extras? Monday December 28, 2009 2:44 Tyrone

2:48 Shelly Anderson: Here's where you get a little insight into what we do. We are perched up high in a press box for games and usually don't get into the main parts of arenas. I do know the toasted-bun hot dogs in Montreal are a big deal for those (unlike me) who like hot dogs, and reporters do make an effort to go get them at Bell Centre. I have walked around the concourse in Dallas, and it's not only huge but still looks shiny and new. And I will say that, despite the nostalgia, I'm familiar enough with Mellon Arena to say when it comes to concessions and extras, it's time for a new building. Monday December 28, 2009 2:48 Shelly Anderson

2:48 Tyrone: Also, give us the best/worst in-game entertainment feature you have seen. I think the best is the inflatable cow that dances to "peanut butter jelly time" at the panthers games. Monday December 28, 2009 2:48 Tyrone

2:52 Shelly Anderson: You have me there. I've been to games at Florida's BankAtlantic Center (and will be there Sunday), and you would think I would remember the cow, but it doesn't, uh, ring a bell. Honestly, we're usually writing during intermissions and breaks. Thanks for pointing out the fact that we miss a lot of the entertainment. I hate to go back to Bell Center, but the huge HD video scoreboard in Montreal is fantastic. It's hard to look at anything else. A lot of teams have young kids come out and play for a few minutes during intermission, and they're always entertaining. And how can you go wrong with the human bowling at Mellon Arena. Monday December 28, 2009 2:52 Shelly Anderson

2:55 Tyrone: Gotcha. I do recall the san jose mascot got stuck hanging from a rope from the ceiling. It delayed the game and everything -- now that is good in-game entertainment.

2:59 Shelly Anderson: Thanks, everyone. Chat with you next week. Have a safe New Year's.
