A taste of the new Penn Pilsner
Monday, December 28, 2009

Penn Brewery still isn't open, but the reviving North Side landmark has been brewing, and it's opening its doors to the public for the first time in months for a "Sneak Peak Open House" from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. You can purchase glasses of the "first batch of Penn Pilsner of the new era," enjoy light snacks and brewery tours, and, the invitation teases, "other surprises" -- a taste of a brand-new brew. For more information call 412-237-9400 or e-mail eric@pennbrew.com.

Founder Tom Pastorius, who in November bought back the business with a group of investors, has said the restaurant will reopen "as soon as the beer is ready." They started the first batch the second week of December; since last year, Penn had been having its brews made at the Lion Brewery in Wilkes-Barre. Mr. Pastorius' latest rough estimate for Pittsburgh-brewed Penn beer being available at area bars and restaurants is the second week of January.
