Traffic restrictions lifted on McArdle Roadway, Blvd. of the Allies
Saturday, December 26, 2009

Two streets were closed, Downtown and on the South Side, because of weather related events, but one already has been reopened.

P.J. McArdle Roadway, leading to Mount Washington from the Liberty Bridge, was closed early today after a landslide was discovered near the top of the hill.

McArdle had been closed since about 1:30 a.m. between Grandview Avenue and the mouth of the Liberty Tunnel.

Pittsburgh Public Works crews were cleaning up debris this morning from the slide.

They said that, though the hillside still is slipping a bit, the street could be opened by 1 p.m. today. Police confirmed by 2 p.m. that the hillside had been cleared and the street was opened.

Most of the debris was being contained by a retaining wall along the side of McArdle.

Work crews also had shut down the a block of the outbound side of the Boulevard of the Allies between Commonwealth Place and Stanwix Street until about noon today.

Police had said workers planned to repair a pothole in the middle of the block in the center lane.

However, the blockade was removed around noon without repairs having been made. It was unclear whether the pit was caused by a water leak or the freeze-thaw cycle of the road surface.

Although the roadway generally was blocked, vehicles had been seen using the left-hand lane to pass through the hazard before the barriers were removed.
