Washington County man killed in head-on crash

A Washington County man was killed in a two-vehicle crash last night in Belle Vernon, state police said.

John Mayer, 50, of Monongahela, had been driving south on Route 837 in Union Township when he lost control of his car at about 7:35 p.m.

The vehicle left the roadway near Courtney Hill Road and struck a utility pole.

Mr. Mayer's car then crossed into oncoming traffic and his car collided head-on with a Chrysler 1500 traveling north on Route 837.

Mr. Mayer,who had not been wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The other driver, Chris Schibik, 42, of Charleroi, was not injured, police said. Mr. Schibik had been wearing a seat belt.

State police still are investigating the cause of the crash.
