People: Gosselin's going, going, almost gone...
Friday, December 18, 2009

Despite claims made Wednesday by Jon Gosselin's lawyer that the soonest we'd see a Gosselin divorce was after the new year, Kate Gosselin's attorney confirmed to E! News yesterday that Christmas could come early for the estranged reality duo, with a judge expected to sign off on their split within 24 hours.

"We're expecting it either today or tomorrow," attorney Mark Momjian said yesterday. Who said there's no such thing as a Christmas miracle?

And what about claims by Jon's attorney, Mark Heller, that the divorce wouldn't be final until next year?

We're not sure if he was being intentionally misleading or unknowingly misinformed (this is talk-first, think-second Team Jon we're talking about, after all), but Kate's crew couldn't resist sounding off.

"I don't know what Mr. Heller is talking about -- he's mistaken," says Momjian of his rival counsel. "The arbitration award has been entered, and it's final and it's binding. We're ready to make a statement as soon as we hear the decree has been signed."

But not a moment before.

"It is an important transition for Kate, and her children and Jon's children, and we want to wait until it is finally done," he adds.

As for Jon, he'll have to make another kind of transition--one that involves disarming himself.

Earlier yesterday, a judge ordered Jon to cease bringing firearms onto the very-soon-to-be former couple's Wernersville, Pa., property after photos surfaced of him taking shot practice in their backyard.

Liberal filmmaker Michael Moore is threatening to organize a boycott of Connecticut in response to Sen. Joseph Lieberman's opposition to key parts of federal health care legislation.

Moore tells The Associated Press he will launch the boycott if Lieberman continues to block the bill and residents fail to pressure him to change his mind. He called for residents to hold rallies and flood Lieberman's office with phone calls and e-mails.

Moore says he will organize millions to boycott Connecticut businesses that have supported Lieberman.

Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, has threatened to join Republicans in blocking health care overhaul over government-run insurance and an expansion of Medicare.

From "Monk" to madcap.

Tony Shalhoub will co-star with Anthony LaPaglia in a Broadway revival of "Lend Me a Tenor," Ken Ludwig's screwball comedy about a missing opera star and the frantic attempt to cover up his absence.

Producer Stuart Thompson says the comedy will open April 4 at the Music Box Theatre, with preview performances beginning March 11. It was first seen on Broadway in 1989.

Shalhoub recently completed his final season of the television series "Monk," while LaPaglia starred in the canceled CBS drama "Without a Trace."

"Lend Me a Tenor" will have an equally starry director: actor Stanley Tucci, who has roles in two of the year's more prominent films, "Julie & Julia" and "The Lovely Bones."

A private middle school in inner-city Atlanta has received $1.5 million from Oprah Winfrey.

The Ron Clark Academy announced the donation yesterday. The innovative school has struggled to raise money this year amid the sagging economy to pay for its $2.8 million operating budget, which is bankrolled almost entirely by donors.

The school in one of the city's poorest neighborhoods is hoping to expand its campus by building a cafeteria, gymnasium and theater.

Winfrey, who has had school founder Ron Clark on her show twice, donated $365,000 to the school last December. Clark wrote the best-selling teaching book "The Essential 55."

The mother of R&B star Ashanti says she was terrorized by a crazed fan who was obsessed with her daughter.

Tina Douglas told a Manhattan jury yesterday that Devar Hurd sent her a series of profane and threatening voice mails and text messages.

She said some of the messages described how he wanted to have sex with the Grammy-winning singer.

Hurd, a gym worker from Indiana, was arrested earlier this year on charges of stalking and harassment. His lawyer said he meant no harm.

Ashanti was raised in Glen Cove, N.Y. The multiplatinum-selling singer got her first record deal at 14; her hits include "Foolish" and "Only U." She has appeared in films including "Coach Carter" and "John Tucker Must Die."

A representative for Melanie Griffith says the actress has had surgery to remove early stages of skin cancer from her face.

Spokeswoman Robin Baum said yesterday the procedure was done early enough to prevent further complications.

The 52-year-old Griffith was left with a black eye after the surgery.

She is set to appear on an episode of TV's "Nip/Tuck" next year.
