Penguins Notebook: Rupp's role reduced as teammates get healthy
Tuesday, December 15, 2009

The Penguins' Mike Rupp had just 6 minutes, 8 seconds of ice time Saturday in a 3-2 overtime win against Florida. He then seemed to fill the role of the 13th forward yesterday at practice.

Coach Dan Bylsma seemed to caution that not a lot should be read into that.

"The power plays, especially the second half of the game, seemed to be every two minutes. That was a big reason why," Bylsma said of Rupp's diminished ice time.

Rupp doesn't play on the power play.

He has done a lot of other things in his first season with the Penguins, including piling up a career-high nine goals and getting spot duty and sometimes more on the top two lines.

With everyone healthy at last, though, Rupp was relegated to mostly the fourth line against the Panthers. In his nine shifts, he had an assist and three hits.

"I liked what he did in the game," Bylsma said. "He had an impact. He did some good things. At the end of the game, when you look at the stat sheet ... the power plays deterred him from getting used a little bit more [like] he should have."

That doesn't guarantee Rupp's role will increase significantly.

With the next two games against rugged rival Philadelphia, it's likely that enforcer Eric Godard will be among the 12 forwards to play after being scratched Saturday. That leaves the intriguing question of which forward Bylsma decides not to dress tonight against the Flyers at Mellon Arena.

Kiss and tell

Bylsma and winger Bill Guerin, both 39, are old enough to remember Kiss, but not too old to enjoy seeing them in concert Sunday night at Mellon Arena.

The show -- with its pyrotechnics and costumed performers -- brought out the rebel in Bylsma a bit.

"I'm glad I went," said Bylsma, who went with the coaching staff. "I enjoyed it. Kiss was a band that I was not allowed to like when I was a teenager or before that. I felt liberated."

The arena was still covered with confetti, Kiss guitar picks and a sticky mess as practice began. Afterward, the concert was a topic in the locker room.

"They're classic," Guerin said. "I saw them once before, 10 or 11 years ago."

This time, he took his children as well as teammates Brooks Orpik and Chris Kunitz.

"They loved it," Guerin said of his children. "It's a spectacle. They didn't know what to expect. They've been to concerts before, but not like this -- a true rock concert."

Orpik's last live concert was Pearl Jam the summer of 2008.

"If it wasn't for Billy Guerin, I never would have gone," Orpik said of Kiss. "He dragged me into it, and I'm glad he did.

"I wasn't a Kiss fan at all, but, especially considering their age, it was one of the better ones I've seen."

Tip-ins

Penguins center and captain Sidney Crosby, on facing a Flyers team that was struggling mightily at 1-7 before a game last night at Boston: "We played a Carolina team that hadn't won on the road [a 3-2 loss at home], and I think we learned a pretty good lesson there." ... Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury began breaking in a new mask. With no neck guard and no design on it yet, the stark white mask combined with his newer all-white pads and glove gave him something of a spaceman look. "It will look better when it's painted," he said. ... The team Christmas party that had been scheduled for Sunday was canceled because of the icy roads that shut down major arteries.
