Girls' Basketball Roundup: Vincentian opens by beating Serra
Royals impressive in Class A matchup

Gabby Baldasare filled up the stat sheet on the opening night of high school basketball in Pennsylvania.

A 6-1 junior center, Baldasare had 13 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists and 9 blocks as Vincentian beat Serra, 57-45, at the Serra tournament in a matchup of two teams ranked among the top five of WPIAL Class A by the Post-Gazette.

Keturah Vactor added 16 points and Ashlee Darby 13 for the No. 2 Royals, a PIAA quarterfinalist last season.

Jamie Tedesco had 16 points to lead the No. 5 Eagles.

Other top games

• Paige Alviani had 20 points and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough 17 to lead Class AAA No. 2 Hopewell to a 63-53 win against District 10 power Mercyhurst Prep in the Butler tournament.

• Hillary Liwosz had 15 points and Brianna Bayly 14 as Class AAA West Allegheny came from behind to defeat Class A No. 4 Rochester, 49-43, in the Beaver tournament.

• Fort Cherry trailed by seven heading into the fourth quarter but outscored Quaker Valley, 15-4, the rest of the way for a 37-33 victory in its own tournament. Jessie Merckle had 16 points to lead the Rangers.

• Val McQuade had 12 points as Shaler beat Peters Township, 45-36, at the Shaler tournament.

• Defending WPIAL Class A champion North Catholic opened up in style, defeating South Park of Class AAA, 48-42, in the Bethel Park tournament.

Stars of the night

• Destiny Brown picked up where she left off as a freshman, scoring 25 points and adding 11 rebounds in Gateway's 42-39 win against Erie McDowell in the North Allegheny tournament.

• Alina Selby had 19 of her 24 points in the first half as Ringgold beat Beth-Center, 57-34, at the Fort Cherry tournament.

• Amanda Temple had 26 points as Avella beat Bentworth, 60-42, in the Avella tournament.

• Mia Smith had 22 points and 16 rebounds as Class AA No. 5 Sto-Rox used a big second half to pull away from Class AAAA Penn Hills, 62-39, in the Montour tournament.

New beginnings

• Steel Valley went 4-16 last season and lost its final 11 games. But the Lady Ironmen opened this season with a 49-45 overtime win against Franklin Regional in the Steel Valley tournament. Leslie McPherson had 13 points, including a key 3-pointer in overtime to put Steel Valley ahead for good.

Milestone

• Butler's Olivia Bresnahan had 22 points to give her 1,012 for her career as the Golden Tornado won in their own tournament, beating Chartiers Valley, 59-49.

• Players with four or more 3-pointers: Hannah Shaffer, Apollo-Ridge, 5; Candace Martino, Bethel Park, 5; Laurel Lindsay, South Park, 4.
