The NCAA has its bowl system, so why can't the WPIAL have the FCS?
The Fumbler has come up with a bowl-game system of his own and will call it the Fumbler Championship Series. Here are some of his ideas for bowl game sites and bowl-game matchups:
Gator Bowl -- To be played at Gateway High School, home of the Gators.
St. Petersburg Bowl -- To be played at Peters Township. St. Petersburg and Peters Township sound enough alike.
Capital One Bowl -- You want a matchup of teams recognizable by capital letters? OK, how about USC vs. NA at OLSH?
Orange Bowl -- To be played at Bethel Park. Hey, orange is part of Bethel Park's school colors.
GMAC Bowl -- The Fumbler knows Aliquippa will be one of the teams in this bowl. After all, the GMAC college bowl takes the champion of the MAC. Aliquippa often wins the MAC (Midwestern Athletic Conference) in the WPIAL.
So there you have it: a five-game FCS bowl system for the WPIAL. Who needs the PIAA playoffs?
The Fumbler was 3-1 in PIAA playoff predictions last week. That made his postseason record 51-18 (.739 percentage) and his season record 530-119 (.816 pct.). Here are his thoughts on this weekend's PIAA semifinal games:
State College (11-2) vs. Cumberland Valley (12-2) at Altoona's Mansion Park Stadium, 1 p.m. tomorrow -- Maybe without so many injury-plagued players, Woodland Hills would have defeated State College and been playing in this game. But don't sell State College short. Winner: State College.
Ridley (13-1) vs. La Salle College (12-1) at Philadelphia North East, 1 p.m. tomorrow -- Ridley is trying to make it to the PIAA title game for the first time since 1990, when Dennis Decker was the team's quarterback. Now Decker is Ridley's coach. Winner: La Salle College.
West Allegheny (12-2) vs. Manheim Central (14-0) at Altoona's Mansion Park Stadium, 7 p.m. today -- West Allegheny had its hands full last week with Erie Cathedral Prep quarterback Shyquawn Pullium. Now West Allegheny faces another talented quarterback in Manheim Central's Justin Gorman, who has rushed for 966 yards and thrown for 1,982. Winner: West Allegheny.
Archbishop Wood (11-2) vs. Selinsgrove (14-0) at Hersheypark Stadium, 7 p.m. today -- Over the previous five seasons, Selinsgrove has lost in the semifinals once and the quarterfinals four times. Winner: Selinsgrove.
Greensburg Central Catholic (12-2) vs. Wilmington (12-1) at Slippery Rock University, 1 p.m. tomorrow -- Wilmington is the defending PIAA champion. Greensburg Central Catholic has never been this far into the postseason. But postseason experience won't matter in this game. Winner: Greensburg Central Catholic.
Philadelphia West Catholic (12-2) vs. Lancaster Catholic (13-1) at Coatesville, 1p.m. tomorrow -- Lancaster Catholic features Kyle Smith, Pennsylvania's all-time leader in passing yardage. Winner: Lancaster Catholic.
Clairton (13-1) vs. Farrell (14-0) at Slippery Rock University, 7 p.m. today -- Although Clairton has been terrific in its 13-game winning streak, Farrell is certainly good enough to beat the Bears. But The Fumbler can't see Farrell scoring more than two touchdowns. Winner: Clairton.
Tri-Valley (10-4) vs. Bishop McCort (13-0) at State College, 7 p.m. today -- The Fumbler knows nothing about Tri-Valley except that there was a WPIAL school for a few years called Tri-Valley. The WPIAL's Tri-Valley wasn't too good. So The Fumbler will try Bishop McCort. Winner: Bishop McCort.
