Federal officials got bonus this morning when they captured a suspect wanted for a home invasion in Hampton last spring. They arrested his mother, too, on a bench warrant.
The U.S. Marshals Western Pennsylvania Fugitive Task Force arrested Earl Joseph Braden, 25, in Shelocta, Indiana County, on charges of robbery, theft and recklessly endangering another person after a home invasion in Hampton on May 12.
According to Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal Mike Baughman, Mr. Braden and another man posed as landscapers and forced their way past an 87-year-old man who answered the door.
They held him at gun point and forced him to open a safe, stealing $50,000 in cash. Then they used zip ties to restrain the man in a chair, police said.
The victim was later found by a family member, Mr. Baughman said. The co-defendant was arrested in August, but Hampton police had been unable to locate Mr. Braden.
They contacted the U.S. Marshals last week asking for help, and the fugitive task force developed information that Mr. Braden may have been staying with his mother in Shelocta.
They arrived at the home just after 6 a.m. today and arrested Mr. Braden without incident. Because his mother, Darlene Nieder, was wanted on a bench warrant out of Allegheny County for a probation violation, she was arrested, too.
The underlying charge against Ms. Nieder, 44, is prostitution.
