The 46th Medallion Ball held at the Hilton
Tuesday, December 01, 2009

The 46th Medallion Ball went green this year, using recyclable paper and locally grown foods in a nod to changing times. But tradition still reigned on Friday evening as 119 young women were presented with the Joan of Arc Medallion by Bishop David Zubik, patron of the ball. The high school seniors contributed a total of 19,000 volunteer hours, for which they were honored during the affair at the Pittsburgh Hilton. (Kristen Taylor topped the list with 600 hours!)

More than 1,200 guests turned out for the festive occasion, filling a ballroom that looked like spring on a cold winter's eve. The "green" theme was reflected in tall flower arrangements of branches, ivy and white flowers by Lori Grandon Designs. Event planner Sheila Weiner draped the ceiling with green satin and placed boxwood topiaries around the dance floor, creating a path for the girls to traverse as they were presented to the bishop.

The pomp and circumstance began with his arrival for the Bishop's Reception, where he greeted guests along with ball chairs (and sisters) Kelly Hanna Riley and Mollie Hanna Lang. Joining them was their cousin Annie Hanna Engel, president of St. Lucy's Auxiliary to the Blind, the ball's beneficiary. Another cousin, Annie Cestra, daughter of Dennis and Annie Hanna Cestra, was a presentee, and all four young women are granddaughters of ball co-founder Anne Hanna.

WTAE's Sally Wiggin served as emcee, introducing each girl and her escort as they approached the bishop. The traditional promenade and waltz followed, with music by the Rick Purcell Big Band. It was extra-special this year -- Mr. Purcell's daughter Joyce was a presentee. Then it was time for dinner, a sumptuous menu of mixed greens with candied pecans, chicken roulade and lamb noisette, Pennsylvania wild mushroom Marnay sauce, organic baby vegetables and apple bread pudding or turtle cheesecake. The evening continued with a much-needed stretch on the dance floor, where youthful energy prevailed.

Helping to make it all possible was a bevy of volunteers including Meg Henne Gibson. Katherine Freyvogel, Julia Unitas Giba, Lynn Bainbridge, Patricia Orringer (daughter Jane was a presentee), Sarah Hanna White, Bonnie Bagay, Gloria Ley, Catherine Loevner, Edyce Rizzi (daughter Margaret was a presentee), Tracie Crisci, Vicki Stein, Molly Quinlan, Jan Kubiska, Maris Bondi, Ann Thomasmeyer, Deanna Rebisa, Terry Jancisin, Mary Lee Gannon, Beth Brunins, Dana Hanna, Jennifer Staley, Heather Ziccarelli, Laura Very, Mai Lan Fagan and Mary Anne Hanna.
