State health centers offering free H1N1 vaccines
Tuesday, December 01, 2009

State residents who are in the priority groups to receive the H1N1 flu vaccine can make appointments to get the vaccine at state health centers.

A limited supply of vaccine will be offered today through Thursday.

Appointments can be made, 24 hours a day, at www.H1N1inPA.com under "What's Hot." People without Internet access can call 1-877-724-3258 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Most of the vaccine available at the state health centers will be live flu vaccine in a nasal mist. The mist can be used in healthy persons between 2 and 49 years old. High-priority groups that may qualify are healthy people from 2 to 24 years old; household contacts and caregivers for children younger than 6 months and most health-care providers and emergency medical services personnel.

It is not recommended for people in the high-priority groups of pregnant women, children under 2, those with certain underlying health conditions and health-care providers who care for people with impaired immune systems. Those groups should receive the injectable vaccine.

Allegheny County Health Department will continue to offer vaccine to high-priority people, without appointments, at the Oakland vaccination clinic, 3441 Forbes Ave. It is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today, Thursday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow. Free parking is available after 4 p.m. Wednesday in a lot behind 3333 Forbes Ave.
