NFL Notebook: One more milestone for Favre
Sunday, November 29, 2009

The abundance of NFL records Brett Favre has accumulated on his resume in 19 seasons is such that even he can't keep track of them all. That was evident this week when it was brought to his attention that today will mark his 282nd consecutive regular-season game, tying Jim Marshall's record for the most games played in a row by a position player.

"I thought that record was already tied or broken," Favre said.

The 40-year-old quarterback could be forgiven for his mistake. He was thinking about the record for most consecutive regular-season starts. That mark came and went long ago, in Week 2 at Detroit, when Favre bypassed Marshall by starting his 271st game in a row.

But the NFL does not recognize that statistic in its record and fact book. It does track consecutive games, and Favre has not missed one since playing in the second half for the Packers against Tampa Bay on Sept. 13, 1992.

Mr. Runyan of San Diego

Here's one you don't find everyday on the transactions wire. When the Chargers signed veteran John Runyan this week to shore up its offensive line, it not only had an impact on San Diego's postseason prospects but also could have an effect on congressional balance of power in Washington. To sign with the Chargers, Runyan -- a longtime Eagles mainstay -- had to put his plans on hold to challenge U.S. Rep. John Adler, D-New Jersey, for his seat in New Jersey's 3rd District. When the season is over, Runyan plans to return to the campaign trail. For the (Congressional) record: Runyan, a Republican, plays right tackle.

Numbers don't lie, but ...

The New Orleans Saints (10-0) put their perfect record on the line tomorrow night at the Superdome against New England. Road teams have won the past three Monday night games and five of the past six. But not all is lost for the Saints. The only home team to prevail during that stretch was the Saints over Atlanta Nov. 2.

His cup runneth over

Can any man have a better Thanksgiving than Green Bay's Charles Woodson. He had two interceptions -- one of which he returned for a touchdown -- a fumble recovery and a sack in the Packers' 34-12 win vs. Detroit. And, oh yeah, he announced a $2 million donation to Mott Children's Hospital at his alma mater, the University of Michigan.

Quick hits

As an addendum to Brett Favre's consecutive games streak (see first note), the all-positions record is held by Giants punter Jeff Feagles, who played in his 347th consecutive game Thursday. ... Favre completed 88 percent of his passes last week vs. Seattle. It is the second time he has completed more than 85 percent in a game this year. They are -- believe it or not for a guy who is 40 and sports his resume -- the first two times he has done it in his career. ... With a win today vs. Cleveland, the Bengals can complete an unbeaten season within the division for the first time in club history. ... The Falcons are apparently growing weary of Jason Elam's woes (6 for 12 in field goals beyond 30 yards, two key misses the past two weeks). They had four kickers in Tuesday for tryouts.
