Greensburg Central Catholic crushes Quips for AA crown
Friday, November 27, 2009

David Miller rushed for 203 yards on 34 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead Greensburg Central Catholic to a 33-7 win against Aliquippa in the WPIAL Class AA title game this afternoon at Heinz Field.

It was the first WPIAL title for Greensburg Central (11-2). The Centurions were making their third title game appearance in five years. Aliquippa (11-2), the defending champion, was making its 20th title appearance.

Rashad Kenney returned a punt 64 yards for an apparent touchdown in the first quarter, but a block in the back nullified the score. Despite the penalty, Aliquippa drove 74 yards on 13 plays to take a 7-0 lead with 4:23 left in the first quarter. Quarterback Mikal Hall capped the drive with a six-yard touchdown run.

Two plays later, Greensburg Central Catholic responded with a 79-yard touchdown run by David Miller. That was the first of four touchdowns for Greensburg Central in the first half, as the Centurions built a 26-7 lead.

The other three touchdowns came on a 4-yard run by Miller, a 2-yard bootleg keeper by Trent Hurley, and a 15-yard scoring strike from Hurley to Evan Marshall.

Greensburg Central iced the victory with a 2-yard touchdown run by Miller with 8:03 left in the game. Miller increased his season rushing total to 2,143 yards on 260 carries.

Aliquippa turned the ball over five times.

The victory earns Greensburg Central its first PIAA title berth. The Centurions will face either Karns City or Bedford in next week's quarterfinals.
