The day after Thanksgiving might be The Fumbler's favorite day of the year.
It is tradition for him to bring home some turkey from his mom's house and eat turkey sandwiches all the next day. Just plain bread, cold turkey and a little mayonnaise. At night, he has a hot turkey sandwich with the gravy spread just perfectly to wet the bread. Not saturate it.
It doesn't get any better than leftover turkey sandwiches -- until this year. The Fumbler has the WPIAL championships as an appetizer and dessert.
Ever since the WPIAL started playing all four championship games at one site in 1986, The Fumbler figured out this is one of the few times the games have been played the day after Thanksgiving. Turkey sandwiches and the WPIAL finals. Isn't life good?
Life was pretty good for The Fumbler in playoff predictions last week. It wasn't quite as good as two weeks ago when he went 16-1. Last week, he was 7-3. His playoff record is now 48-13 (.787) and his season record is 527-114 (.822).
Here are his thoughts on the WPIAL championships today and the one PIAA playoff game involving the City League champion. The WPIAL games are all at Heinz Field.
Gateway (12-0) vs. Woodland Hills (11-1), 8 p.m. -- Does Gateway coach Terry Smith finally get his WPIAL championship after losing three previous times? While coaching is vital in high school sports, it is still the players who determine outcomes of games. And the players who will be most key in this game are Gateway quarterback Rob Kalkstein and Woodland Hills' running backs. Woodland Hills must pressure Kalkstein, maybe forcing him into a few bad decisions. Gateway must control Woodland Hills' running game.
The Fumbler remembers thinking at the start of the season: "Watch Gateway win it this year when they're not the favorite." Winner: Gateway.
Hopewell (12-0) vs. West Allegheny (10-2), 5 p.m. -- Everyone is focusing on the running backs -- Hopewell's Rushel Shell and West Allegheny's Mike Caputo. But The Fumbler thinks the outcome of this game will rest on which quarterback completes a few big passes -- West Allegheny's Jared Buck or Hopewell's Matt Hundenski. Hopewell won the first meeting this season and will win its second WPIAL title. Winner: Hopewell.
Greensburg Central Catholic (10-2) vs. Aliquippa (10-1), 1:30 p.m. -- The Fumbler is trying to figure out who has the more impressive mustache -- Pitt's Dave Wannstedt or Aliquippa's Mike Zmijanac? The only mustache The Fumbler has had in his lifetime is a milk one.
Enough facial hair talk. Maybe Greensburg Central Catholic really is the team that was ranked No. 1 in the state at the beginning of the season. The Centurions are peaking at the right time. But how do you go against Aliquippa in a WPIAL final? Winner: Aliquippa.
Rochester (12-0) vs. Clairton (11-1), 10:30 a.m. -- Who has the better percentage -- The Fumbler in picking playoff games? Or Rochester quarterback Jasson Adamson in completing passes? They're close. The Fumbler has correctly predicted the winner of 79 percent of postseason games. Adamson has completed 70 percent of his passes.
But this game will be all about defense. These are two of the top 10 defenses in the state. The Fumbler picked Rochester at the start of the playoffs and will stick with the Rams, even though Clairton has done just about everything to change his mind. Winner: Rochester.
Schenley (10-1) vs. Erie Cathedral Prep (10-2), 7 p.m. at Veterans Stadium, Erie -- Yes, The Fumbler looked like an idiot after picking City League champion Schenley to lose last week to Punxsutawney. Schenley won, 54-0. But The Fumbler won't be fooled two weeks in a row. This is a PIAA Class AAA playoff game. Winner: Erie Cathedral Prep.
