Here's a look at some of the memorable rushing performances in WPIAL championship games played at Three Rivers Stadium and Heinz Field ...
Rapheal "Pudgy" Abercrombie, Aliquippa, 1984 -- A 5-foot-6, 180-pounder, Abercrombie carried a heavy load for the Quips, running 40 times for 238 yards in a 20-15 victory against Mount Pleasant. It was Aliquippa's first title since 1964.
LaVar Arrington, North Hills, 1993 -- His rushing statistics weren't staggering (99 yards on 14 carries) in a 21-13 victory against Upper St. Clair. But it was a pretty impressive performance for a freshman who would go on to Penn State and then become the No. 2 overall pick in the 2000 NFL draft.
Nate Stewart, Blackhawk, 1996 -- Belle Vernon had a future Notre Dame running back in Jason Murray, but Stewart stole the show, rushing for 262 yards on 23 carries in Blackhawk's 24-6 win. It is the most rushing yards in a championship game at Three Rivers or Heinz.
Steve Breaston, Woodland Hills, 2001 -- One of the most exciting players in recent WPIAL history, Breaston (now playing with the Arizona Cardinals) played quarterback for the Wolverines. But he tore through Central Catholic's defense with his running, gaining 219 yards on 15 carries in a 41-6 Woodland Hills win.
Nate Waldron, Rochester, 2002 -- Rochester rolled for 306 rushing yards in a 26-13 victory against Duquesne. Waldron led the way with 205 yards on 33 carries.
Eugene Jarvis, Central Catholic, 2004 -- Only 5 feet 6, Jarvis was gigantic in a 28-0 victory against Gateway, which featured future NFL player Justin King. Jarvis rushed for 221 yards on 29 carries in a 28-0 victory. King had 105 yards on 25 attempts.
Orlando Torres, Thomas Jefferson, 2007 -- Nicknamed by his teammates "The Streakin' Puerto Rican," Torres was a workhorse, carrying 44 times for 248 yards in a 34-0 victory against Montour.
Terrelle Pryor, Jeannette, 2007 -- Now a quarterback at Ohio State, Pryor was ranked the No. 1 player in the country two years ago. He showed off his great ability by running for 166 yards on 12 carries, and completing 5 of 6 passes for 81 yards in a 61-12 dismantling of Beaver Falls.
