Road travel to increase this Thanksgiving
Officials encourage travelers to relax, take their time, report aggressive driving
Wednesday, November 25, 2009

If you spot an aggressive driver on the Pennsylvania Turnpike this holiday weekend, you can report it to state police by dialing *11 on your cell phone.

If you see a pack of costumed women kicking up a fuss at Pittsburgh International Airport, relax and enjoy -- it's a fringe benefit of traveling on the Busiest Day of the Year.

AAA is forecasting a small increase in travel this Thanksgiving compared to last year, when much of America stayed home and fretted about a free-falling economy.

The turnpike is expecting 2.1 million vehicles over the five-day period that began today, a sharp drop from the 2.8 million estimate two years ago before fuel prices soared and the economy tanked.

The airport is offering this treat: some of the Radio City Rockettes who are performing the "Radio City Christmas Spectacular" in Pittsburgh through Dec. 6 will be in the baggage claim area and security checkpoint in the landside terminal from 10 to 11 a.m. today to greet travelers.

AAA predicted that 38.4 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home over the holiday weekend, a 1.4 percent increase over last year when 37.8 million traveled. Last year's total reflected a 25 percent decline from 2007.

The number of travelers by air is expected to be 2.3 million compared with 2.5 million in 2008, a decline of 6.7 percent, AAA reported.

The turnpike suspended all lane-blocking construction work at 3 p.m. yesterday and will keep it that way until 6 a.m. Monday. The Thanksgiving period is the busiest holiday on the toll road.

Peak travel times are expected to be 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, when slow-moving or stopped traffic is possible.

In a release, state police urged motorists to refrain from aggressive driving.

"Slow down, take a deep breath and relax to ensure that you, your passengers and other holiday travelers arrive alive," said Cpl. Richard N. Dean of Troop T, which patrols the turnpike.

"If you see an aggressive driver on the turnpike, you can get a state police response by dialing • 11 on your mobile phone," he said.

Real-time traffic information for the turnpike is available at www.paturnpike.com or 1-866-976-TRIP (8747). For traffic updates for other highways in the state, visit 511pa.com or dial 511.
