Chicago police officers reprimanded for photo taken during G-20 summit
Wednesday, November 25, 2009

Two Chicago police officers received reprimands following an internal investigation into a trophy photo taken with a University of Pittsburgh student arrested during the G-20 summit in September.

Reprimands were issued to a department chief as well as a commander involved in the incident, said Roderick Drew, a spokesman for the force.

Police declined to release their names.

The internal investigation was launched after an Internet video showed officers with a handcuffed suspect who was made to kneel as the group of helmeted police posed behind him for a photograph.

The suspect, Kyle Kramer, was charged with failure to disperse. His attorney, Cris Hoel, said Mr. Kramer was scooped off the street by Chicago officers detailed to G-20 security while he was walking home from dinner. Mr. Hoel yesterday said he was unaware of the reprimands but welcomed news that the issue was addressed.

"Any acknowledgment that Kyle was mistreated is more than we have seen from the local authorities, and that would be welcome," he said.

Mr. Kramer was en route to his family home in Reading, Berks County, yesterday and could not be reached. Mr. Hoel said charges against his client will be dropped in a deal that requires him to complete 50 hours of community service before the end of January.
