Q: If Pitt wins out, could they possibly be a Texas loss away from the national championship game? In other words, do you think they would/could jump LSU, Georgia Tech, Boise State, Cincinnati, TCU, and the loser of the Florida/Alabama match-up in the SEC championship game in the BCS standings based on the strength of their wins over WVU and Cincinnati down the stretch?
Adam Zurawsky, Latrobe
ZEISE: No, but it is nice to continue to dream this dream. I think regardless of what happens in the Florida-Alabama game the loser will remain ahead of Pitt. I also think Texas might remain ahead of Pitt with a close loss to either A&M or Nebraska in the conference title game. TCU isn't likely to lose and isn't going to fall behind Pitt under any circustance. I just don't see how it could happen because too many things would have to happen for Pitt to get there -- starting with the Panthers winning both games left and that is not a given.
Q: Is it time to give Dave Wannstedt his due credit after so much doubt on many of our parts, that he has exceeded our expectations for the Pitt football program and just might be building a powerhouse for years to come? Regardless of the outcome of the next two games, -- wins I hope! -- I say yes! Just look at the NFL rosters and the number of Pitt players there making a big impact and the record speaks for itself. I never thought I'd be saying this about Dave Wannstedt. Outstanding!
Mark Ulam, Boca Rotan, Fla.
ZEISE: He has done a very good job of putting together a solid program and a very good base and everything else. He has done a great job of building a foundation and he has really got the thing rolling the right way. But I think before we declare anything, we have to see how the final two games play out. If Pitt wins twice, gets to 11-1 and ranked in the top 5 -- then yes, this has been a special year. But if Pitt loses twice and finishes 9-3, ends up in Charlotte and ranked like No. 23 -- yes, it is progress but it shows there is still some work to be done.
Q: Brian Kelly could leave Cincinnati to go to Notre Dame. If he were to leave for that job, would that mean that Dave Wannstedt be the best coach in the Big East?
Chris Zaleski, Lewisburg, Pa.
ZEISE: Dave Wannstedt is the best coach in the Big East right now ... for Pitt. In other words, he is the right fit and the right guy for the Pitt job. And I don't think there is another guy in the Big East who could do a better job at Pitt, other than maybe Kelly, and mostly because this is Wannstedt's school and it is his passion. Similar to Greg Schiano at Rutgers and Bill Stewart at West Virginia. I think Wannstedt has done a good job but I think there are some very good coaches in the Big East. Randy Edsall always has that team ready to play and they are tough and competitive every week. Doug Marone has coached a team with Duke's point guard at quarterback and made them at least respectable. Jim Leavitt lost his all-everything starting quarterback and has done a good job getting the most out of a freshman quarterback. But again, to me it is all about certain coaches being the right fit for a place. A great example of this is Rich Rodriguez -- he is an excellent football coach who would have been a great hire had he gone to Alabama but he has never felt right at Michigan and I think that's been a part of his struggles.
