History: Manor has maintained its quiet, comfortable nature despite its busy location. It is surrounded by Penn Township and is near six other towns: Adamsburg, Irwin, Jeannette, North Huntingdon, North Irwin and Penn Borough. Heavily traveled Route 130 passes just north of the borough, Route 993 cuts through it, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike is on its western border. Railroad tracks and Bushy Run bisect the town, and Bushy Run Battlefield is a few miles to the east.
Manor is experiencing a mini-population boom. According to the U.S. Census' latest estimate, in June 2008, Manor had gained 39 residents from the previous year. Only eight other municipalities in Westmoreland County showed an increase during that time.
The region that would become Manor was once heavily forested. In 1783, Stofel Walthour built a mill on Brush Creek, the first building in the area and the only one for many years. Manor eventually grew up around the Pennsylvania Railroad, which was completed in 1852.
Manor wasn't such a quiet, comfortable place on Aug. 11, 1934, when five men robbed Manor National Bank of $3,000. That was the lead story in The Pittsburgh Press' Sunday edition the next day.
