Allegheny County sheriff's deputies Friday night located and arrested a fugitive wanted for sexually assauting a child who fled during a hearing earlier this week.
Deputies found Raymond Demus, 41, of Wilkinsburg, hiding behind a large-screen television in a house on Mannheim Street on the North Side.
Mr. Demus, who was accused of assaulting an ex-girlfriend's child, was charged in June 2008 with two counts each of rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, statutory sexual assault and indecent assault of a person younger than 13.
Mr. Demus was free on bond in that case. On Tuesday, he was in the Allegheny County Courthouse for a hearing and was approached with an offer of a 15-to-30 year prison sentence in exchange for a guilty plea, deputies said in a statement.
"Unhappy with the offer he was given," Mr. Demus left the courthouse during a recess in the hearing and did not return when it resumed, according to the statement.
A bench warrant was issued for his arrest, and deputies issued public pleas for information about his whereabouts.
Mr. Demus now is jailed without bond. In 2007, he married Andrea Curry-Demus, of Wilkinsburg, who has been hospitalized and is awaiting trial on charges of killing 18-year-old Kia Johnson and cutting her open to steal her unborn baby last year.
The women met while Ms. Curry-Demus was visiting Mr. Demus and Ms. Johnson was visiting another man in the Allegheny County Jail.
