District Roundup: Defense leads Robert Morris
Colonials win final five to finish season
Sunday, November 22, 2009

Robert Morris' defense harassed Monmouth quarterback Kyle Frazier all day and led the Colonials (5-6, 5-3) to a 23-9 victory against the host Hawks (5-6, 4-4).

Robert Morris picked off Frazier three times, sacked him five times and forced a fumble in the Northeast Conference win. Frazier completed 13 of 34 passes for 130 yards and one touchdown.

The Colonials were equally impressive stopping the run, limiting Monmouth to 62 yards on 31 carries -- an average of 2.0 yards per carry.

Robert Morris managed 272 yards total offense while holding Monmouth to 192 yards.

Colonials freshman quarterback Jeff Sinclair, a Highlands High School product, threw two touchdown passes, completing 13 of 17 attempts for 128 yards.

Running back Russ Myles scored one touchdown and had 74 yards rushing on 23 carries.

The win was the final game of the season for the Colonials, who started the season 0-6.

Other games

• Bryant 20, Duquesne 0: The Bulldogs intercepted Dukes quarterback Kevin Rombach five times and held him to 90 yards passing in an NEC victory at Duquesne's Rooney Field.

Bryant quarterback Michael Croce completed 18 of 35 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Jerrell Smith added 96 yards rushing for Bryant (5-6, 4-4).

Duquesne's ground attack was solid as the Dukes (3-8, 2-6) averaged 4.1 yards per carry. Cleo Williams had 95 yards rushing on 17 carries but his goal-line fumble in the fourth quarter preserved Bryant's shutout.

Duquesne committed six turnovers in the loss.

It was the first time Duquesne was shut out since a 24-0 loss against Albany in 2002.

• Central Connecticut State 14, Saint Francis 13: The Blue Devils clinched the NEC championship with the win at Saint Francis in Loretto, Pa. But it did not come easily for Central Connecticut State.

The Red Flash led, 13-7, late in the fourth quarter until CCSU's Eric Richardson's 2-yard touchdown run with 2:31 remaining gave the Blue Devils the go-ahead score.

After Saint Francis running back Kyle Harbridge broke a 7-7 tie with a 31-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, the Red Flash fumbled the snap on the extra point, failing to score the PAT.

That one point proved to be the difference in the contest.

Harbridge finished the game with 95 yards rushing on 23 carries.

Saint Francis intercepted Central Connecticut quarterback Aubrey Norris twice and limited the Blue Devils to 94 yards rushing.

But Saint Francis had two turnovers of its own, both in the second half, including one that killed a 14-play, 52-yard drive to start the third quarter.

• Geneva 29, Greenville 28: The Golden Tornadoes rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to beat the Panthers in the National Christian College Athletic Association's Victory Bowl yesterday at Greenville, Ill.

Nick DiPietro kicked a 20-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining to give Geneva (8-3) a one-point victory against Greenville (7-3). DiPietro's kick capped a Golden Tornadoes' drive that started at their 3 with 2:00 remaining.

Geneva running back Gerard Muschette had 113 yards rushing on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the Golden Tornadoes.

It was Geneva's fifth Victory Bowl win in six appearances, the most by a school since the Victory Bowl was founded in 1997.

The NCCAA comprises 14 schools from around the country.
