Hunter Cal Welch wears new digital camouflage called Optifade, in Glenville, N.Y. Modern camouflage has evolved from red-and-black checked coats that broke up a hunter's silhouette to patterns that mimic the fields and forests, to raggedy suits that resemble a pile of fluttering leaves and brush, to more recent digitally designed clothing meant to fool a deer's eye into seeing nothing recognizable at all.

Turns out that old adage about "an apple a day" is highly suspect from a scientific point of view, but much of the Johnny Appleseed story is based on a real guy who did what the old yarn claims. In fact, most of what you think you know about the common apple probably isn't true. The story of the non-native invasive species' spread across North America includes a long chapter based in Franklin, Pa.
