H1N1 immunization clinic draws huge crowd
Saturday, November 21, 2009

With a line extending almost a quarter mile around Chartiers Valley High School, health officials said they fear they won't have enough vaccine for everyone who showed up at an Allegheny County Health Department clinic for immunization against the H1N1 virus.

Janet Russo, manager of the Chartiers Valley clinic, said they anticipated being busy in the morning but were surprised by the throng that showed up. They formed a line from the high school auditorium entrance, around the school building and all the way to the bleachers of the stadium. As one man talking on a cell phone said as he walked toward the high school, "This is an all-day line, not just an hour. I don't know if it's worth it."

But those in line said it was moving fairly quickly with 12 teams providing the vaccine inside the school.

Merrill Nash of Upper St. Clair, standing in line with her husband, Ed, held a folding chair

"We expected a crowd and therefore the chair," she said.

The Chartiers Valley site was one of four clinics being held from 10 am. to 4 p.m. today throughout Allegheny County. Others are at North Allegheny High School, McKeesport High School, and the former Reizenstein School building, now being used as Pittsburgh Schenley High School.
