Meeting to tackle school closing plans
Saturday, November 21, 2009

Two Pittsburgh school board members have set up their own citywide meeting for Monday so the public can comment on a school closing proposal and any other issues facing Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Board members Randall Taylor and Mark Brentley will host the meeting from 6 to 9 p.m. at Pittsburgh Schenley, Shadyside.

On Nov. 2, a consulting firm recommended closing 15 school buildings to save money. No decisions have been made from this report, and there is no formal proposal before the board.

Mr. Taylor said those who come to the meeting will have a chance to speak longer than they could at a regular board public hearing and will have a chance to speak with each other and organize.

Mr. Taylor said he expects representatives of PURE Reform, which grew out of the movement to save Pittsburgh Schenley, and the education committee of the NAACP to be among the attendees.
