Free vaccines ready for priority groups
Friday, November 20, 2009

The Allegheny County Health Department will have four free H1N1 vaccine clinics for at-risk people tomorrow.

Health department officials say the clinics will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at these locations: Chartiers Valley High School, 50 Thoms Run Road, Collier; McKeesport High School, 1960 Eden Park Blvd., McKeesport; North Allegheny High School, 10375 Perry Highway, McCandless; and the former Reizenstein Middle School (now Schenley High School), along Penn Avenue, East Liberty.

The priority groups include children 6 months to 24 years old; people who live with or care for children under 6 months old; pregnant women; health care and emergency medical services personnel; and people 25-64 with underlying medical conditions.

Both injectable and nasal spray vaccine will be available, health officials say. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No appointment is necessary.

People planning to come early in the day are urged to have eaten before standing in line.

A vaccination consent form can be downloaded from the health department Web site, www.achd.net, so it can be filled out beforehand. Additional clinics will be scheduled as more vaccine becomes available, health officials say. For more information, call 412-687-2243.

The state health department also plans to have 18 H1N1 vaccine clinics open today through Sunday for at-risk populations. The hours will be 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and Sunday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Appointments can be made at www.H1N1inPA.com or by calling 1-877-724-3258.

In southwest Pennsylvania there will be three clinics at these locations: Richland Township Fire Department, 1321 Scalp Ave., Johnstown; Mon Valley State Health Center, Eastgate 8, Room 140, Monessen; and the Butler County State Health Center, 100 Brugh Ave., Monarch Building, Suite 201, Butler.

North of Allegheny County, a state-sponsored clinic will be held at the Mercer County State Health Center, 25 McQuiston Drive, Jackson Center.
