Colin Dunlap's West Virginia football chat transcript
Thursday, November 19, 2009

Colin Dunlap: YOU. ARE. LOOKING. LIVE -- at 34 Boulevard of the Allies. The Post-Gazette world headquarters. This is the WVU football chat. Go ahead with the questions.

CanUEERme: Is it true athletic director Eddie P gave the Big East officials a piece of his mind at halftime at Cincinnati.

Colin Dunlap: Yes.

Stewguy: Colin, after seeing Cincy play in person, what do you think about them?

Colin Dunlap: Pitt will beat them. I think Pitt's offensive line will beat them up, take it right at them and simply beat them up. Also, I think Pitt's d-line will give Cincinnati's front problems. Simply put, I think Pitt is just a stronger team -- in a physical sense -- than the Bearcats. And, it doesn't hurt Pitt's chances that the game is at Heinz, not Nippert.

Paul_Alexander_s_Man_Tan: If you had to come up with a point spread right now for the Pitt game, what would it be?

Colin Dunlap: Pitt -6.5

theWellHungarian: A girl I started seeing asked me what I was doing the day after Thanksgiving, I told her that my philosophy is "if there's college football on in the afternoon, doing stuff is optional" and I planned on watching college football all day and had Pitt-WVU to cap off the night. She got upset and said that if I was just going to lay on the couch and do nothing then I should spend time with her & her family. I told her that we just met and I don't subscribe to that. Do you think Coach Tomlin subscribes to any of that or all of that?

Colin Dunlap: Congrats on asking the longest question in chat history. Now, let me weed through it for a second. Done ... read the whole question. To answer: Coach Tomlin strikes me as more of a family man, and not the lazy type either. I cannot see him hanging around on the couch all day.

MotownMike: What is the problem with Wes Lyons?

Colin Dunlap: We have been round and round with this one. The answer is a combination of skill and effort. While I think Wes has the potential to be very good, potential is nothing unless you do something with it. In my estimation, it simply does not look like he is giving full effort all the time. Now, to the skill portion. Just because he is large, doesn't mean he is great. With that said, maybe he is just an average football player and, in the recruiting process, teams were recruiting him more on what he could turn into than what he, in fact, was at that time. Unfortunately for WVU, it doesn't look like they have turned him into what they thought they could -- and it is no fault of theirs. It comes back to effort.

MotownMike: Can West Virginia stop Deon Lewis?

Colin Dunlap: Is he related to Dion Lewis?

CanUEERme: Colin- Does WVU really have a chance against Pitt?

Colin Dunlap: Sure they do. I would think, particularly because the game is in Morgantown, WVU stands a chance. As you know -- and as we have seen -- anything can happen down there in games. Is Pitt the better team? Yes, at this point, yes. Can West Virginia win? Yes. Will it take a very good West Virginia effort and/or some Pitt mistakes? Probably.

gooooooooooers: What do you think about that terrible third down handoff to Jock Sanders?

Colin Dunlap: I have been asked this on a couple of radio shows and have also written a blog post about it. I do not mind the call, but I think the wrong personnel was in on the play. Bill Stewart has said that he was going to go for it on fourth down -- he was playing to win. For that, he should be celebrated. With that said, that, in essence, makes the third down play call a normal second down play. On that play, he called a power run to the right (on third-and-9) with Jock Sanders and Jock gained just a yard. Again, I cannot fault the playcall, I would just have rather have seen Ryan Clarke carry the football there.

Paul_Alexander_s_Man_Tan: If WVU loses to Pitt and then loses at Rutgers, does at least talk of a hot seat become legitimate?

Colin Dunlap: Maybe...I think WVU would also have to lose the bowl game, too.

Stewguy: Should Jeff Mullen get fired as WVUs o-coordinator?

Colin Dunlap: No, not at all. Here is why. The majority of the playmakers in his holster aren't even guys who are regularly on the field -- or in uniform -- yet, as they are all sophomores, freshmen, or redshirting. Give Jeff Mullen a chance when he has Geno Smith at QB, Clarke at FB, Tavon Austin playing every down, Starks as a go-to receiver and guys like Heastie, JD Woods, etc. in there on every snap, and then we can really get a gauge on him.

ImmaManIm40: If not throwbacks, can you find out if WVU will at least wear their yellow-on-yellows? Pitt seems to thrive when they see them, like waiving red ... errr, scarlet in front of bulls (i.e., the USF Bulls...).

Colin Dunlap: I should know Monday night what WVU will wear ... I'll post it on the blog.

Stewguy: Will Noel Devine be healthy for Pitt?

Colin Dunlap: I would guess probably 80-85 percent ... which at this time of year is very good for a feature back, particularly a smallish one.

ImmaManIm40: Does WVU have a reliable placekicker? Otherwise, I didn't understand (still don't) why Stewie & Co. "went for it" on 4th down on the drive right before their final TD. That's the same FG they needed at the end!

Colin Dunlap: It would have been a 42-43 yard FG...why is much of the WVU fan base failing to comprehend that is far from a chip shot -- for ANY college kicker?

CanUEERme: What do you think about Stewart not contacting the Big East about the blown TD call?

Colin Dunlap: He just said he wasn't going to come out and publicly go after them. I've got a $5 bill in my pocket saying he made a call up there privately --- dealing with the matter the way it should have been dealt with, and not through the media.

412Mountaineer: I like that Stew went for it on 4th down. He was criticized for punting inside the 35 a few games ago, now criticized for going for it.

Colin Dunlap: precisely. some people -- message board heroes especially -- love to have it both ways, though.

ImmaManIm40: Pitt has an impressive pass rush. How good / deep is WVU's O-Line this year? Do you think they'll whither as the game goes on?

Colin Dunlap: That is a great point -- and one I plan on writing for Monday's Post-Gazette.

412Mountaineer: What do you think of the David Nyarsuk signing? I saw one of the recruiting sites was the first to report it. The bball team has been lacking that big physical inside force.

Colin Dunlap: Was it the same recruiting site that reported Allegheny College didn't have a football team? I didn't happen to see the correction.

Paul_Alexander_s_Man_Tan: Is playing at West Virginia going to be the toughest challenge for Pitt this season

Colin Dunlap: Could be. Then again, if Cincinnati goes to Heinz Field unbeaten, it might be tough to top a Big East title game.

412Mountaineer: Why has Jock Sanders been getting carries lately?

Colin Dunlap: Because Noel has been, as Bill Stewart calls it, "dinged up."

ImmaManIm40: I didn't care who won between WVU and Cincy. Close call, but objectively / personally I thought the replay booth got it right (TD then a fumble). What did you think?

Colin Dunlap: I don't know, I am still on the fence. The one part of it that was strange to me, in being at the game was this: not one guy, not one offensive lineman, not Isaiah Pead himself, not the Cincy sideline, no one, was lobbying for a touchdown when it happened. That was just kind of strange. When the play happened, it was kind of like "was a fumble the right call?" and a TD was never in the cards.

Paul_Alexander_s_Man_Tan: From what you have seen of the gameday atmosphere in Morgantown, any thoughts and any thing you would change?

Colin Dunlap: I think the students get too many tickets. But I have heard there is some zany way they have to go about getting tickets, have to go to the Mountainlair or something. If I am the president, I would portion off a smaller section for the students and admit them with their IDs at the gate. This would cause a "Stew-ville" kind of thing where kids camped out and the student seats were really at a premium.

gooooooooooers: Colin- Is Pitt's o-line the best in the Big East and what will WVU do to stop them?

Colin Dunlap: One of the best, if not the best. Although, I will say UConn's o-line is legit....they steamrolled Cincy.

ImmaManIm40: Any update on whether Pitt & WVU will wear throwbacks for the game?

Colin Dunlap: You should email Paul Zeise and ask him -- he is an expert on all things uniform related, especially the script Pitt. OK folks, I have to run. thanks for all the great questions and, as I said, get in touch with Zeise for anything uniform related -- he's the expert.
