Holiday stuffing brings us to your door early

To accommodate publication of our large holiday edition on Thanksgiving Day -- an edition traditionally stuffed with holiday stories and ads -- next week's South edition will be published a day early, on Wednesday, Nov. 25. We'll be back on our usual Thursday schedule Dec. 3.

Look for next week's pre-holiday edition of news and features to get you in the mood as you cook, clean and fret (will Aunt Martha like your pumpkin pie?) for the big day.

We will share stories, such as that of the South Allegheny High School freshmen who each Friday help deliver Meals on Wheels to senior citizens in Glassport. Tomorrow these students are also dropping off some cute Thanksgiving turkey magnets for the seniors to put on their fridges. The thoughtful little gifts were made by district first-graders.

Then there's the Fill a Bus food drive in West Mifflin Area schools, where this week students coordinated a drive to fill a bus full of food and toiletries to deliver in time for the holiday to the Greater Pittsburgh Area Food bank.

These are the kinds of stories that have us giving thanks for the type of good folks who live here.

Memorials on the wings of a dove

And, speaking of goodwill projects: Family Hospice and Palliative Care has kicked off its ninth annual "Memorial Tree of Love" Holiday Campaign. For $20, a loved one's name is inscribed on a tag placed around the neck of white doves that will adorn holiday trees at seven malls in the region, including Century III.

Doves are seen as a symbol of those who are missed deeply.

"This campaign started with one tree in The Galleria [Mt. Lebanon] in 2001," said Maureen Haggarty, vice president of hospice development. "By 2008, we had 1,500 names displayed."

Proceeds benefit thousands of families in 11 counties in Western Pennsylvania who receive compassionate care, regardless of ability to pay.

'Tis the season for publicity
And speaking of the busy holiday season, many groups and individuals are calling us to get publicity for their holiday events -- we're hearing about everything from craft shows to casting calls for living Nativity scenes.

Please, please send pertinent details -- no, you do not have to be Will Shakespeare -- just bare bones details and a contact phone number to suburbanliving@post-gazette.com.

Or you can do it the old fashioned way with help from Uncle Sam. Send snail mail to Southscape, our bulletin board, 34 Blvd of the Allies, Pittsburgh 15222.

We'll take it from there. No phone calls, please.

We like to share your good news.
