Plush: Accent on room accessories
Wednesday, November 18, 2009

HIGH POINT, N.C. -- When it comes to freshening up a room the accent is on accessories. Lamps, throw pillows, mirrors, clocks, small occasional chairs and tables, as well as vases and one-of-a-kind hand-crafted objets d'art are all on the docket for quick-lift decorating.

One advantage to using accessories is how easy it is to incorporate them into an already established design scheme. A well-placed mirror or room screen can redirect the focal point and bring another dimension to the space. Brightly colored or motif pillows pull rooms together and give sofas or chairs a new personality. For a bigger impact, put down a new area rug. Different patterns and colors can have you changing the ambience of a room with the seasons. Smaller items like trays or sconces can inject personal style. Or maybe it's time to get dynamic by replacing a traditional clock with an oversized timepiece.

"Home fashion is much like fashion apparel," explains Rick Janecek, creative director of accessory giant Global Views.

"Furniture styles are like clothing; they evolve and they can change quickly," he observes. "Uniquely designed accessories can stimulate joy, surprise and conversation, and in hard times they are the lipstick of the room because in hard times the sale of lipstick goes up."

So if your ship hasn't come in yet, bring it a little closer with a one-of-a-kind handcrafted masterpiece. It can be a schooner, yacht or galleon -- they all have a boat-load of style. Here is a sampling of introductions at the Fall International Home Furnishings Market in High Point, N.C. Most will be available at the beginning of the new year.
