Police consider charges in Edinboro triple-fatal crash
Tuesday, November 17, 2009

State police and the Erie County district attorney are mulling whether charges should be filed in connection with the triple-fatal crash last week in which a college freshman from Baldwin Borough was among the victims.

Investigators have determined a third vehicle, also driven and occupied by Edinboro University students, had been involved in high-speed road play with one of the vehicles involved in the fatal crash Nov. 11.

Authorities have declined to identify the occupants of the third vehicle, pending further investigation, said state police Sgt. Mark Zaleski.

The accident occurred as a car driven by Domenico Crea, 18, of Erie, and the vehicle with the unnamed occupants had been speeding side by side, southbound on Draketown Road in Washington Township.

Mr. Crea's car, with John Eyrolles, 18, of Baldwin Borough as his passenger, was traveling in a lane for opposing traffic, police said. Both were freshman at Edinboro.

At the crest of a hill on the roadway, Mr. Crea's car collided violently with a northbound vehicle driven by Edinboro University senior Sheldon Harmon, 21, of Bolivar, N.Y.

All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

"If not for the grace of God, those other two [in the third car] could be dead," Sgt. Zaleski said.

Investigators have not determined how fast the three vehicles had been traveling.

Township officials said there is no posted speed limit along that stretch of road. This means the default speed limit is 55 mph, said township Manager David Anthony.

The crash is the third traffic incident in which Mr. Crea has been involved since classes began at Edinboro this fall.

On Sept. 4, university police pulled him over on Scot Road near the campus gazebo. The citation said the suspect turned over two bongs and a third smoking pipe he had in the vehicle.

Just three days before the fatal crash, at 3:03 a.m. Nov. 8, Mr. Crea was stopped by university police for carelessly driving 40 mph through the parking lot outside McComb Fieldhouse.

During the stop, he was cited for underage drinking and, as a minor, for operating a car while having alcohol in his system.

All four counts involved in these two incidents are summary counts.

District Judge Denise M. Stuck-Lewis declared the cases closed after Mr. Crea's death.

Cumulative fines for the two incidents would have been at least $288, according to citation records.
