An East McKeesport woman pleaded guilty today to fleeing the scene of an accident that left a 66-year-old pedestrian dead in 2006.
Casandra Gatewood, 46, pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, drunken driving, leaving the scene of an accident and speeding.
She admitted that she spent the afternoon of March 8, 2006, at a bar, where she had three rum drinks. She left after an argument with her husband and, in clear daylight, accidentally struck Cathleen Callahan in the crosswalk at Liberty Avenue and 29th Street, near the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre School in the Strip District.
She drove off, dragging Ms. Callahan for half a block, police said. Officials pronounced her dead at the scene.
Witnesses got her license plate number, and police stopped Ms. Gatewood on Kirkpatrick Street in the Hill District shortly after the incident.
The officer observed that her badly damaged car had blood on it, but she denied any knowledge of the accident. Her blood-alcohol content was 0.198, above the legal limit for driving of 0.08, Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Walker said.
Ms. Gatewood will be sentenced Feb. 9 by Common Pleas Judge Randal B. Todd.
