Q: Could you please clarify something for me? When I look at Pitt's roster, I see only two open slots for next year - Chase Adams and Jermaine Dixon. However, Pitt signed three recruits with JJ Moore's signing. How is that possible? Is someone leaving early that we don't know about?
Sam Schachner, Pittsburgh
Fittipaldo: Pitt does only graduate two seniors. Adams and Dixon will leave the program at the end of the season. Before Moore signed last week, the coaching staff already signed point guard Isiah Epps and shooting guard Cameron Wright. The issue with Moore is whether he will be eligible next season. I spoke with his coach at South Kent Prep, and he told me the plan was for Moore to be at Pitt next season. However, he said there were some unresolved academic issues and said there was a possibility that he might have to go to prep school before matriculating to Pitt. If he does not qualify, he could sign again with Pitt next fall, which would make him a member of the 2011 class, not 2010.
If Moore does qualify, then one of the incoming recruits or one of the current players on the roster would have to transfer. It's way too early to speculate about that. Lots of players are getting opportunities early this season while Dixon is out with his injury and Gilbert Brown is serving his suspension. Players will play their way in or play their way out based on the way they play from now through March.
