UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. --- With little else working, No. 19 Penn State turned to its defense.
Outside linebacker Navorro Bowman returned an interception 73 yards for a touchdown midway through the third quarter to put the Nittany Lions ahead for the first time and they went on to beat Indiana, 31-20, on Senior Day at Beaver Stadium.
Tailback Evan Royster scored his second touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run and quarterback Daryll Clark added a 1-yard score for Penn State (9-2, 5-2 Big Ten), which trailed 10-0 after one quarter.
Royster also caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Clark with six seconds to go in the first half to forge a 10-10 halftime tie.
Penn State, which got a 33-yard field goal from Collin Wagner, had to overcome two interceptions by Clark, two fumbles on punt returns and a missed field goal to improve to 13-0 all-time against the Hoosiers (4-7, 1-6).
Nick Freeland kicked field goals of 27 and 38 yards for Indiana and quarterback Ben Chappell threw touchdown passes of 26 yards to Demario Belcher and 6 yards to Tandon Doss.
