Interim superintendent named for Gettysburg battlefield
Thursday, November 12, 2009

Mel Poole, a 30-year veteran of the National Park Service, has been named interim superintendent at Gettysburg National Military Park and will assume his duties there Nov. 23.

John A. Latschar, the park's previous superintendent since 1994, was reassigned last month after an inspector general for the U.S. Department of the Interior found Mr. Latschar viewed more than 3,400 sexually explicit images on his government computer, a violation of department policy.

Mr. Poole, 58, is superintendent of Catoctin Mountain Park in Thurmont, Md., a post he has held for more than a decade.

Mr. Poole lives 17 miles south of Gettysburg, so his commute will be fairly short. He will not apply for the post of superintendent, which will be filled sometime next year.
