Ron Musselman: Good afternoon from Unhappy Valley, where Penn State has lost of two biggest home games of the year by a combined 28 points. The Nittany Lions still are trying to pick up the pieces from the Ohio State loss and looking ahead to their home finale Saturday against Indiana.
bubs: Is it possible that Daryll Clark has been highly overrated these past 2 years simply because he was more competant than Anthony Morelli? Don't get me wrong, he seems like a really great kid, but he hasn't exactly won any BIG games as the starter. Even the OSU game last year, he was knocked out in the 4th quarter.
Ron Musselman: I agree with all of what you said. Daryll Clark did one thing that Anthony Morelli couldn't -- he got Penn State to the Rose Bowl last year. I think Morelli has a better arm and Clark is a better runner. Clark also has a chance to be drafted, while Morelli was cut in training camp after signing with Arizona as a free agent. When it comes to winning big games, though, there isn't much difference between the two. They have both failed in most instances.
Captain: General question on college football, I read an article in the PG yesterday that if PSU wins out and gets some help from other teams, they would have a chance at a BCS game. Is this a reason why college football should go to a playoff system? PSU may not be one of the best ten teams in the country. However we all know PSU would bring huge ratings to TV and students/alumni/fans would help the local economy of the host city.
Ron Musselman: First of all, I am glad you read my story yesterday. I agree the BCS system is messed up. Even if Penn State finishes 10-2, it doesn't deserve to be in a BCS game. The Lions have won just two games against teams with winning records and have yet to beat a ranked team this season. But, as well all know, bowl games are about selling tickets and Penn State does travel well. So, yes, if the Lions do win their final two games and finish in the top 14 of the final BCS standings, I do think there is a good chance they will end up playing Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl.
Memory_of_Terrelle: The team is going to lose a lot of good players to graduation & maybe the pros. Next year we'll be grooming a new QB, etc. Do you think they're peaking this year?
Ron Musselman: Peaking. I don't understand your question. How can a team be peaking when it just got stomped 24-7 by Ohio State? I think reeling is a better word. And as simple as it seems, I think Penn State will beat Indiana Saturday, but there is no guarantee the Lions will win at Michigan State next weekend. They have struggled there since joining the Big Ten and blew a 17-point second-half lead there in 2007 and lost 35-31 in East Lansing.
bubs: Realistically, isn't this about what we should've expected from this season? Kind of a 'tweener year for the Lions, after the Rose Bowl, but breaking in an entirely new O-line and WR corps?
Ron Musselman: I predicted 10-2 at the beginning of the year for the regular season and again last week right here before the Ohio State game. Penn State's offensive line fooled us into thinking it was good during its five-game winning streak following the loss to Iowa. The Lions need to blow up the line and rebuild it before next season. It is pretty bad. Also, I was surprised that wide receiver Derek Moye disappeared from the offense Saturday. He was the team's leading receiver entering the game, but was shut out by the Buckeyes.
Peroni: I'm no more impressed with the Buckeyes or Terrelle Pryor than I was before the game. He played OK, but mostly was able to capitalize on the fact that OSU had excellent field position for the entire game. Why was this the case?
Ron Musselman: I would disagree with your evaluation of Pryor. I thought he played well. Granted, he had good field position, but he made plays to win the game, which is what you expect your quarterback to do. You know, the game could have been even worse had Pryor connected on that long touchdown pass with his receiver Dane Sanzenbacher right before the first half. Pryor's pass to Posey for the touchdown looked good to me. Then again, I am not surprised.by the reaction of Penn State fans. They still feel snubbed and will never give Pryor any credit.
ImmaManIm40: Is there any organized grassroots efforts by grumbling Nits fans about PSU's recent weak non-conf schedules? Everyone plays 1-2 cupcakes, but Eastern Illinois in mid-season? BWT, wouldn't "The Entrenched Icon & his Housebroken ADs" be a great name for an indie band?
Ron Musselman: We have talked about Penn State's soft non-conference schedule all year and I have written about it on numerous occasions There is nothing left to say. The Lions? non-conference schedule is horrible, doesn?t prepare them for anything and it is a big reason why they got blown out by Iowa and Ohio State at home.
ImmaManIm40: Does PSU have an unofficial "coach in waiting," ala Florida State? It certainly hasn't worked perfectly for the Semioles, because their old guy doesn't know when it's time to quit (too). But at least it set the end date, with some transition beforehand.
Ron Musselman: There is nothing in place at Penn State in regards to a coach-in-waiting. By the way, I see how smoothly the transition has been working at Florida State. I just can't see Bobby Bowden stepping aside for Jimbo Fisher. Just as I couldn't see Joe Paterno stepping aside for someone else, either.
bubs: I'd hardly call those games blowouts. They weren't good, but don't overdo it.
Ron Musselman: Well, we disagree. Let's see, against Iowa, Penn State was up 10-0 and got outscored 21-0 the rest of the way. Against Ohio State, it was 7-7 and the Buckeyes scored the final 17 points. Sounds like second-half domination to me -- anyway you look at it.
Big_Money: These Hoosiers have looked a bit plucky in some games I've caught this season, what do you know about them?
Ron Musselman: I know they have lost three Big Ten games by three points or less. I know they are 0-12 all-time against the Nittany Lions. And I know they are tied with Michigan for last place in the conference at 1-5. Having said that, they are better than normal. They have a good quarterback in Ben Chappell.
Peroni: It's not a matter of feeling 'snubbed' by Pryor. But c'mon, that wasn't the Texas offense out there either. He played well enough to win. But he wasn't the be all, end all of college quarterbacking either. That Heyward kid won the game for Ohio State.
Ron Musselman: Would you be complaining if Daryll Clark played the same kind of efficient game for Penn State and won? I'll bet not.
WVUSTINKS: If Pitt played Penn State who would win? (neutral field, @happy valley & at big ketchup)
Ron Musselman: I don't see them playing in a bowl game, so there's no sense of answering the question. If the two teams do play, I will answer it then.
Ron Musselman: Thanks for all the questions today. Join me back here next Thursday at 1 p.m. We rehash the Indiana game and look forward to the regular-season finale at Michigan State.
