A Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony is set for Dec. 7 at West Mifflin Area Senior High School. Sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 914 "Intrepid" since 1991, the event is co-sponsored by the American Merchant Marine Veterans of the Mon Valley.
Ceremonies begin at 12:55 p.m., or 7:55 a.m. in Hawaii time -- the same time bombing began 68 years ago. Keynote speaker is state Rep. Bill Kortz, D-Dravosburg.
As in years past, Pearl Harbor survivor and VFW Post Life Member Bernie Ordos will be in attendance.
Patriotic songs will be performed by West Mifflin Area High School Titan Thunder Band. The West Mifflin Area High School's Air Force Junior ROTC Honor Guard will also participate.
Donations to benefit local veterans and troops serving overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan will be accepted.
For more or to reserve, call Quartermaster Mike Mauer at 412-461-2305.
The West Mifflin Area School District will hold its annual Fill the Bus food drive from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Pennsylvania Coach Lines has donated the use of a school bus, which will be parked at the middle school. The community is requested to drop off donations of nonperishable food, toiletries, detergent or diapers for the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank.
On Friday, students and staff will ride the bus to the food bank to deliver the donations.
