Think magic in Verona

The New Olde Bank Theatre, near the banks of the Allegheny, is hoping to cash in on a Pittsburgh premiere.

"The Year of Magical Thinking," based on Joan Didion's best-selling memoir, will make its regional debut at 8 p.m. tomorrow at that Verona venue, 722 Allegheny River Blvd. The other performances will be at 8 p.m. Saturday and Nov. 20 and 21. Tickets are $12, and reservations are required. Late arrivals will not be seated.

This is a one-woman play featuring Lori Barrage, of Natrona Heights. It details events in the life of Ms. Didion in the year following the unexpected deaths of her husband, John Dunne, and daughter, Quintana Roo. Sean O'Donnell, artistic director of New Olde Bank, directs the play.

The memoir won a National Book Award and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist.

A good skate

A sizable chunk of Saturday will be devoted to crafts and the craft of ice skating at Center Ice Arena in Delmont.

The events will begin with a free craft show starting at 10 a.m. It will feature local crafters and vendors and will run until 3 p.m.

Skating will be half price, starting with Learn to Skate, noon to 1 p.m., followed by a public session from 1 to 3.

Afterward, members of the Center Ice Figure Skating Team will put on demonstrations of freestyle, ice dance, group numbers, artistic and rhythmic ice skating.

Proceeds will benefit the team, which is sponsoring the events. Canned items are being collected for the Westmoreland County Food Bank.

This is one of 16 town hall meetings scheduled nationally for tomorrow, and sponsored by Advancing Futures for Adults with Autism and Autism Speaks.

The meeting will originate from the Chicago area via a live Web cast. Participants can vote electronically on proposals for change.

There are no seats available at the Monroeville venue. To get a free "virtual seat," register at afaa@autismspeaks.org.

Alcosan sessions

The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority will hold two more meetings in the East to gather public input on federally mandated sewer system upgrades expected to cost billions of dollars and result in increased rates.

Doors open at 7 p.m., and presentations begin at 7:30 at both sites: today at Union Project, 801 N. Negley Ave., East Liberty, and Monday at North Versailles Library, 1401 Greensburg Ave.
