The two largest classifications of the WPIAL playoffs are missing some spice from the south.
Just two teams total in Class AAAA and Class AAA come from the south suburbs -- Bethel Park (AAAA) and Thomas Jefferson (AAA).
The Class AAAA Great Southern Conference went 1-3 last week as eighth-seeded Upper St. Clair, 11th-seeded Mt. Lebanon and 15th-seeded Baldwin all lost.
The southern-dominated Big Seven Conference of Class AAA fared just as poorly, featuring losses from No. 3 seed Chartiers Valley, No. 10 seed Trinity and No. 11 seed Belle Vernon Area.
But the south compensates in quality what it lacks in quantity.
Bethel Park is the No. 2 seed in the Class AAAA playoffs, and Thomas Jefferson is the No. 1 seed in Class AAA.
Four south schools are still alive in Class AA and Class A, including some heavyweights.
South Fayette is the top seed in Class AA and Clairton is the No. 3 seed in Class A. Also alive are Keystone Oaks in Class AA and Brentwood in Class A.
Keystone Oaks' only loss this season came against undefeated South Fayette.
If the Golden Eagles want to keep their season alive past tomorrow night, they'll have to beat the only other remaining undefeated WPIAL Class AA team.
Seventh-seeded Keystone Oaks (9-1) and second-seeded Mount Pleasant (10-0) will meet tomorrow night at Penn Trafford's Warrior Stadium in the second round of the WPIAL Class AA playoffs.
After missing the postseason with a losing record last season, the Vikings followed running back Bryce Ansell to an undefeated record and an Interstate Conference championship. Ansell leads Mount Pleasant with 11 touchdowns, and he has rushed for more than 1,000 yards.
The Vikings have outscored their opponents by an average of more than three touchdowns per game.
Mount Pleasant beat Kittanning, 45-6, last Friday in the opening round.
Keystone Oaks boasts two running backs who ran for more than 1,000 yards in the regular season: Matt McCann (1,420) and Jordan Maddox (1,087). Both players scored 20 regular-season touchdowns.
Their only loss was in the third week of the season against eventual Century Conference champion South Fayette, 28-22.
The Golden Eagles beat Burrell, 27-0, last week to advance.
The victor of the Keystone Oaks-Mount Pleasant contest will play the winner of tomorrow night's game between third-seeded Center (9-1) and 11th-seeded Greensburg Central Catholic (8-2).
All four No. 5 seeds lost last week. But perhaps the most shocking upset was North Hills' 19-7 victory against fifth-seeded McKeesport.
Two weeks ago, the Tigers were the Post-Gazette's second-ranked team in WPIAL Class AAAA. Their only regular-season losses came against two teams ranked among the Post-Gazette's top five in the state: Gateway (No. 3) and St. Joseph's Prep (No. 4).
Meanwhile North Hills entered last week's game with a 4-5 record, losing every game it played against a team with a winning record.
But last week, the Indians limited the Tigers, who averaged more than 300 yards rushing per game, to 197 yards on the ground and just one score.
McKeesport scored an average of 40.5 points per game.
Greensburg Central Catholic's David Miller does not have more yards than every running back in the WPIAL.
But he's crossed the most important yard line more than anybody else.
And he's making a habit of it.
For the second consecutive year, Miller finished the regular season as the leading scorer in the WPIAL. Miller scored 27 touchdowns and caught one 2-point conversion -- a total of 164 points.
His closest challenger, Hopewell's Rushel Shell, scored 26 touchdowns for 156 points.
Miller had 32 touchdowns last season and accounted for 200 points total.
Now a 5-foot-10, 215-pound senior, Miller led the Centurions to a 7-2 regular-season record and a Class AA playoff berth with a No. 11 seed.
Greensburg Central Catholic upset sixth-seeded Freeport 35-6 last week. Miller scored three touchdowns.
The Centurions will play Center at 7:30 tomorrow night at Fox Chapel's James Burk Memorial Stadium.
One of the most intriguing matchups this week will play out on live TV.
FSN Pittsburgh will broadcast tomorrow night's game between Class AA top-seeded South Fayette (10-0) and ninth-seeded Aliquippa (9-1).
The defending WPIAL champion Quips have just one loss this year.
