Driver charged in May crash that killed passenger
Wednesday, November 11, 2009

A Fayette County motorist yesterday was charged with homicide and related counts in connection with the traffic crash death of a teenage passenger.

Charges filed against Robert M. Kelley, 21, of Uniontown, also include reckless driving, careless driving, speeding and failure to yield at a stop sign.

He is free on $10,000 bond, pending a preliminary hearing scheduled at 9 a.m. Dec. 30 in Uniontown.

The charges stem from a fatal crash May 3 in which Jonathan Kondrla, 16, an Albert Gallatin Area High School student from New Salem, was killed.

Jonathan had been a front seat passenger in the car driven by Mr. Kelley, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:50 a.m.

The car had gone airborne and slid sideways into a pole, after failing to stop along Upper Middletown Road in Menallen Township.

The vehicle struck two utility poles, knocking down live wires, the coroner's office reported.

The coroner's report said Jonathan died of severe head and neck injuries.

Mr. Kelley also suffered major injuries. He was taken by helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.
