Aliquippa doesn't have its team name anywhere on its football jerseys. That's good for South Fayette because coach Joe Rossi is trying to get his players to forget Aliquippa's name this week.
South Fayette (10-0) is the WPIAL's No. 1 seed for the Class AA playoffs and plays Aliquippa (9-1) Friday night in a quarterfinal game at Chartiers Valley. In terms of tradition, the two couldn't be more different.
South Fayette has won six playoff games in the history of its school. Aliquippa has won almost four times that many playoff games (22) since 2000 alone. The Quips also are the defending WPIAL champion.
"That's the thing that can beat you: worrying about them being Aliquippa," Rossi said.
Immediately after beating Beaver in the first round Friday, Rossi started working on his players' psyches about Aliquippa.
"I told them you can't get wrapped up playing Aliquippa. That's the thing we're going to battle all week," Rossi said. "I think some teams get intimidated just because they're Aliquippa. I played at Riverview and I remember playing against teams like Clairton and Duquesne. You can't worry about who they are."
South Fayette has one of the WPIAL's top quarterbacks in Christian Brumbaugh, who has thrown for almost 1,900 yards. He leads the WPIAL in touchdown passes with 26.
"The thing with Aliquippa is, they're just starting to get tuned up when the playoffs start," Rossi said. "You know those kids live for this playoff time. ... But we've seen every defense thrown at us this year. Teams have rushed three and dropped eight. Teams have played man-to-man and brought the house.
"It's all about making the right decisions, and when you have a quarterback like Christian, it gives you a chance to win."
Keystone Oaks is the only team in the WPIAL with two 1,000-yard rushers: Matt McCann and Jordan Maddox. But now the Eagles meet a Mount Pleasant team that has given up more than seven points only once in the past six games.
Keystone Oaks is trying to make it to the Class AA semifinals for the first time in school history; Mount Pleasant hasn't played in a semifinal game since 1996, when the Vikings were in Class AAA.
Although Sto-Rox has talented senior quarterback Paul Jones, the Vikings have been using the "wildcat" offense at times during recent games and putting Jones on the bench. Sto-Rox meets Beaver Falls in the quarterfinals.
In the other quarterfinal game, Greensburg Central Catholic meets Center. Greensburg Central averages 35 points a game, but Center gives up 6.9.
North Catholic meets Springdale in a rematch of a game earlier this season, won by North Catholic, 20-14. Springdale, which knocked off No. 5 seed Monessen in the first round, is getting more production lately from freshman running back Sean Dugan, who had 111 yards rushing against Monessen.
In another quarterfinal, Avonworth meets a Clairton team that is No. 1 in the state in defense (3.8 points) and No. 2 in offense (48.9).
In the other quarterfinals, Rochester plays Brentwood and Laurel meets Beth-Center.
