Police from several jurisdictions staffed a surprise truck inspection checkpoint on Interstate 376 in Findlay today.
Three of four lanes on the inbound side of the highway (formerly Route 60) were closed near Pittsburgh International Airport while state, Pittsburgh and Port Authority police, joined by officers from Findlay, Mt. Lebanon, Moon and Jefferson Hills did the inspections over a period of several hours.
Ten trucks were ordered out of service because of safety deficiencies.
David Pritt, safety press officer for PennDOT District 11, said the site was chosen because the highway and exit lanes for Business Route 60 provided enough room "to create a safe working environment." Such inspections typically are done at rest stops, but there is only one in Allegheny County, he said.
The enforcement effort was funded with a grant from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, said Tom Jacques, Pittsburgh's commercial vehicle safety coordinator and one of 17 officers who inspected the trucks.
