California to play host to Fayetteville
Monday, November 09, 2009

California University of Pennsylvania earned an at-large bid and a first-round home game in the NCAA Division II football playoffs. Pairings for the tournament were announced yesterday.

The Vulcans, which lost at Shippensburg, 42-35, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship game Saturday, are one of four PSAC squads in the 24-team field.

Shippensburg (9-2) is the No. 2 seed in Super Regional One and received a first-round bye. Edinboro (8-3) and East Stroudsburg (8-3) from the PSAC also are in the field and will meet at noon Saturday with East Stroudsburg as the home team.

California (8-3), which won the PSAC West Division for a fifth consecutive year and is in the Division II playoffs for a third year in a row, will play host to Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion Fayetteville State (N.C.) at noon Saturday at Adamson Stadium. If the Vulcans win that game they will earn a rematch with Shippensburg Nov. 21.

It is only the second time in Division II playoff history that four teams from the PSAC are in the playoff field. The last time was 2004.

West Liberty State (10-1) from the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is the No. 1 seed and also has a first-round bye in Super Regional One. West Liberty will play the Edinboro-East Stroudsburg winner Nov. 14.

The NCAA Division II title game is at 1 p.m. Dec. 12 in Florence, Ala.
