SAN JOSE, Calif. --Penguins defenseman Kris Letang left their game with the San Jose Sharks tonight about midway through the first period and is questionable to return.

As he was shooting a rebound toward the Sharks' net during a Penguins power play, Letang was knocked down by San Jose defenseman Kent Huskins. He fell hard, stayed on the ice for a few seconds, then went to the bench favoring his right arm.

Team officials said Letang is questionable to return to the game.

The Penguins already are playing without defenseman Sergie Gonchar (wrist), center Evgeni Malkin (shoulder), winger Tyler Kennedy (groin) and forward Max Talbot (shoulder).

Penguins defenseman Alex Goligoski was in the lineup tonight.

He missed yesterday's practice because of illness, prompting the Penguins to recall Deryk Engelland from their farm club, but Goligoski was able to play.

Goligoski participated in the morning skate which also starred Evgeni Malkin.

The Penguins center, who has missed the past four games because of a strained right shoulder, joined his teammates late during their morning skate today at HP Pavillion. It is the first time Malkin has been in practice since leaving the lineup, although he is not participating in drills.

Malkin was wearing a red, non-contact jersey. He is not expected to play tonight against the Sharks.

The Penguins recalled defenseman Deryk Engelland from their Wilkes-Barre/Scranton farm team, which heightened speculation that Goligoski might not be available for the team's game tonight.

Engelland, who was one of the final cuts in training camp, has two assists in 11 games with Wilkes-Barre. He has not played an NHL game.

Engelland is looking to make his National Hockey League debut. The six-year pro has worked his way up the ranks to the NHL following stints in Las Vegas, South Carolina and Reading of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), and Lowell, Hershey and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL.

The Chetwynd, Alberta native played five seasons of junior hockey with Moose Jaw of the Western Hockey League.
