GNC earnings rise

Pittsburgh-based General Nutrition Centers, Inc. today reported third-quarter earnings before income taxes, depreciation and amortization of $59 million, compared with $54.3 million for the same quarter of 2008.

That represents an increase of 8.7 percent. The company also reported net income of $19.5 million, a $3.2 million, or 19.7 percent, increase over net income of $16.3 million for the same quarter of 2008.

Net income, as a percentage of revenue, was 4.5 percent in the third quarter of 2009, compared with 3.9 percent in the third quarter of 2008. GNC officials say net cash from operations amounted to $21.5 million.
