Staff Sgt. David Wieger was 28 years old when he was killed in Iraq on Nov. 1, 2007.
A graduate of Norwin High School, he studied criminal justice at Westmoreland County Community College and then enlisted in the Air Force to work with electronics. In September 2007, Sgt. Wieger was sent to Iraq to serve as a special agent with the Office of Special Investigation.
While on an assignment near Balad Air Base, the North Huntingdon native and two other soldiers were killed when an improvised explosive device destroyed their Humvee.
On Tuesday, Sgt. Wieger's family will be honored guests at the South Allegheny School District's 10th annual Veterans Day Assembly.
Sgt, Wieger's father, Mike Wieger, a Vietnam War veteran, said their family has always observed Veterans Day.
For the second year, he will attend the South Allegheny ceremony with his wife, Lori, and their son Mike and his wife.
"We've always felt the same about Veterans Day," he said. "Being a veteran, you know what they all go through, so you think highly of the guys that go into that service."
The middle school staff and students will host the 10th annual Veterans Day Assembly from 9 to 10:45 a.m. in the high school auditorium on Washington Boulevard in McKeesport.
Mark Purcell, chief of staff to state Rep. Bill Kortz, D-Dravosburg, and a Vietnam veteran, will be the keynote speaker. Community members are welcome to attend this event as well as several other ceremonies throughout the South Hills next week.
Students at Mellon Middle School on Castle Shannon Boulevard in Mt. Lebanon School District will hold an 8:15 a.m. assembly Wednesday to read letters and tributes they have written to people they know who have served in the armed forces.
In the downtown Castle Shannon, commemorative banners will be displayed on brackets for light posts and telephone poles.
Over the past few weeks, Castle Shannon residents were able to buy banners depicting an image of a family member who is a veteran, said borough Manager Thomas Hartswick.
A ceremony will be held at 11:11 a.m. on Veterans Day at the Castle Shannon Memorial Parkett behind the Ice Castle.
"We are quite hopeful that this is going to be a moving ceremony," Mr. Hartswick said.
Elizabeth Forward Middle School on Rock Run Road is inviting the community to attend its ceremony at 1 p.m. Wednesday, which will include a display to honor prisoners of war and those missing in action.
"The children are just spellbound watching the ceremony, and it's very quiet and respectful," district spokeswoman Jane Milner said.
