An eighth-grader at the Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy in Oakland was arrested yesterday after a fire was set in a second-floor boys' bathroom.

The fire involved an aerosol can that was lit with an accelerant, said school district spokeswoman Ebony Pugh. The can had exploded and was found in two pieces near the toilets. No one was injured. A toilet was damaged, and a backpack caught on fire.

City firefighters and the arson squad were called to the scene. Students were out of classrooms for more than two hours.

The school, which is in the former Frick building in Oakland, is in its first year and is phasing in grade levels. It currently has students in grades 6 through 9.
