Firm recommends closing 8 city schools
Monday, November 02, 2009

A consulting firm tonight recommended closing eight Pittsburgh Public Schools and 15 district buildings to save money amid declining enrollment.

Among the schools recommended for closing are Oliver and Peabody high schools. Oliver students would go to Langley High School and Peabody's would go to a reconfigured Westinghouse High School.

The proposal, by DeJong Inc., an Ohio planning firm, was unveiled at a school board business and finance committee meeting. District officials have said there will be no immediate vote to implement the recommendations, rather, the district will use the recommendations to develop its own plans for matching the number of buildings to academic needs. \
