Ross Fisher defeated Masters champion Angel Cabrera on the third playoff hole to set up a World Match Play Championship final against Anthony Kim, who beat Robert Allenby, 5 and 4.
Fisher secured a 1-up win after Cabrera conceded yesterday, having needed five shots to reach the green. Fisher had powered his second shot 244 yards to within 5 feet of the pin in fading light at the Finca Cortesin course in Casares, Spain.
Kim rallied from an early two-hole deficit against Allenby, pulling away at the 27th hole when he holed an approach from 101 yards.
The 36-hole final is today.
PGA Tour officials canceled the weather-stricken Viking Classic in Madison, Miss., because of unplayable course conditions. There will be no makeup date and players will move on to the final event of the season, the Children's Miracle Network Classic Nov. 12-15 in Orlando, Fla.
John Cook took a six-stroke lead in a bid for his second Champions Tour victory in three weeks, shooting a 5-under 67 in the third round of the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Sonoma, Calif. Cook had a 19-under 197 total. Russ Cochran (68) was second at 13 under.
Ian Poulter was 4 over through six holes in the third round of the Singapore Open, dropping this Englishman into a tie for the Singapore Open lead with France's Thomas Levet and Japan's Kodai Ichihara. Poulter, five strokes ahead after completing a second-round 64 in the morning, faltered in the afternoon to fall to 8 under before thunderstorms stopped play. Levet and Ichihara each were 2 under for the round. Levet completed eight holes, and Ichihara finished seven.
Bill Britton shot a 7-under 65 for 13-under 203 total to take a one-stroke lead over Paul Daniels (66) after the third round of the Senior PGA Professional National Championship at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The low 35 finishers will qualify for the 2010 Senior PGA Championship in May at Colorado Golf Club near Denver.
Saint Louis junior guard Paul Eckerle will miss the entire season with a knee injury, leaving the team without an upperclassman.
Serena Williams will play big sister Venus in the final of the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, Qatar. Serena advanced to the title match when Caroline Wozniacki retired with an apparent abdominal injury while trailing, 6-4, 0-1. Venus Williams advanced to her second consecutive final in this event by rallying past Jelena Jankovic, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Serena Williams withdrew from the U.S. team that will face Italy in the Fed Cup final Saturday and next Sunday, deciding she needs to rest after a long season. Vania King replaces Williams.
