NHL Notebook: Injuries, turnovers take toll on Detroit
Sunday, November 01, 2009

Even before the loss of center Valtteri Filppula, the Detroit Red Wings were concerned about turnovers, something they were looking to limit entering their game last night at Calgary.

The game is the final one on a five-game trip general manager Ken Holland and several players have called "way worse" than opening the season 0-2 in Sweden.

It has been costlier, too, as Filppula -- a second-line center and utility forward -- will miss six to eight weeks after sustaining a broken right wrist in a turnover-plagued, 6-5 shootout loss Thursday night against the Oilers in Edmonton.

The Red Wings lost Johan Franzen at the start of October to a knee injury that will keep him out at least through January.

Filppula's absence means Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk will be split up.

So, at least for now, Zetterberg will be the center for wingers Dan Cleary and Jason Williams, and Datsyuk will center for wingers Todd Bertuzzi and Tomas Holmstrom.

Milestone for Crawford

Marc Crawford became the 15th coach in league history to reach 1,000 games Friday night as his Dallas Stars lost, 6-5, against Florida in a shootout. Scotty Bowman is the leader with 2,141 games over 30 seasons for five teams. Crawford is tied for 14th with the late Roger Neilson.

Intriguing numbers

When rookie goaltender Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins shut out the visiting Edmonton Oilers yesterday, he extended two of the longest and most unusual streaks in recent league history.

It goes like this:

The Oilers last defeated Boston Oct. 17, 2000. The teams do not meet that often during the regular season, but that's still a long time between wins against any team.

But it gets better for Boston or worse for Edmonton.

The Oilers last scored against the Bruins Dec. 3, 2005. As a result of Rask's performance yesterday, Boston's shutout streak against Edmonton now stands at 204 minutes and two seconds.
