Mother, baby killed by train in Westmoreland County
Friday, October 30, 2009

A mother and her baby were killed today in Derry Borough when the woman attempted to cross a set of railroad tracks with a baby stroller and was struck by an oncoming freight train.

Borough police Chief Randolph Glick was nearby at the time and saw the train coming and attempted to warn the woman, but he was not able to prevent the accident, said borough Mayor Susan E. Bortz.

The woman and the child were struck about 5 p.m. by a westbound Norfolk Southern freight train, Ms. Bortz said.

Two other children who were with the woman were not injured, but witnessed the accident and were taken to a local hospital, said Dan Stevens, a spokesman for the Westmoreland County Department of Public Safety.
