Get out and vote

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday for the general election.

Allegheny County results will be online that night at www.post-gazette.com and in print Wednesday in the Post-Gazette.

And we'll have Westmoreland County vote totals and stories about the key municipal and school board races in the East next Thursday.

She's a contender

"Be a Star" is an online singing contest run by Miley Cyrus. And Amy Colalella is taking it literally.

Amy, 16, of Plum, is proving to be a star. She is among four finalists in the nationwide contest, where the grand prize is a record deal. The winner will be coached by Ms. Cyrus.

Participants must submit music videos of themselves. Until the most recent round of competition, only members of Ms. Cyrus' official fan club could vote for "Star" performers at www.mileyworld.com. Now, voting has been opened to the public at www.mileycyrus.com.

At that site, Amy -- a student at Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, based in Midland, Beaver County -- can be viewed singing The Beatles' "Yesterday."

She entered the contest with about 5,000 others in August 2008. Details of the next round are pending.

Amy's father, Gabe, said she has never had formal singing lessons but has long been musically inclined.

"She has played the violin and guitar, and she has always enjoyed singing. When Amy was younger, my wife [Carole] had to drive 45 miles one way to work. Amy would sing along the way."
